Psychologists have determined that the most prevalent fear among humans is public speaking. I have been blessed to not have had that fear to overcome. I'm as comfortable speaking to an auditorium full of people as in a room of close friends. But effective public speaking is about far more than just overcoming fear; it is about being able to deliver a message that is on topic, answers questions, inspires action and provides results. At least that is the general consensus, but I believe one other ingredient is critical. A good speaker must also be able to relate to the audience.
People WILL NOT listen to you if they can't relate to you. I came from a very humble background in the ranch country of the Texas panhandle. A land of cowboys and oilfield roughnecks. My travels through the Ministry, Navy, politics and business have also given me the opportunity to rub shoulders with Professors, Admirals, Congressmen, and CEO's. I'm quite comfortable in front of any audience and can relate on any level.
